University tuition fees are set to rise with inflation from next year, taking fees to almost £10,000, the Education Secretary has announced.

Bridget Phillipson shared the new details during a statement in the House of Commons as part of a broader post-16 education and skills reform.

The announcement will will apply for the next two years, with new legislation drawn up to automatically increase fees every year thereafter.

However automatic yearly rises will kick in only for universities that meet quality standards set by the Office for Students

The immediate increase from 2026 means that current undergraduate students in their first or second year will be affected.

Foundation year courses in classroom-based subjects will have their fees frozen for 2026/27 and 2027/28

Maintenance loans, which help students cover living expenses like rent, food, and travel, will also increase each academic year in line with inflation.
