Police investigating alleged offences committed leading up to the local elections in Tameside on 7 May have arrested a further individual.

The man, aged 25, was arrested this morning in the Ashton-under-Lyne area, on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud. He has since been released on police bail.

Five people previously arrested as part of the investigation also remain on bail pending further enquiries.

Multiple lines of enquiry have already taken place say police who say they remain in contact with the Electoral Commission and local partners as work is progressed.

In the days leading up to and following the local elections  on May 7, police received reports surrounding concerns about candidates within the St Peter’s ward where Labour against results in the borough won with 1,352 votes, with an independent candidate receiving 1,175 and Reform UK with 864.
