A train has derailed on the West Coast main line in the Lake District between Penrith North Lakes and Oxenholme with emergency services on scene currently.
The train had left Glasgow just after 6.00am and was travelling to London carrying 130 passengers
It is believed that there are no casualties and all passengers have been evacuated safely to a nearby hotel. Officials are investigating a possible landslip from recent heavy rains as the cause, with lines expected to remain closed for days during recovery efforts.
The Westcoast main line is fully closed following the incident Avanti WestCoast have said
‘Due to a derailed train between Penrith North Lakes and Oxenholme Lake District, all lines are blocked. We are strongly advising customers not to travel north of Preston today.”
North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) said it had sent paramedics to the scene near the village of Shap, which is on the West Coast Main Line.
In a statement, NWAS said: “Following reports of a train derailment near Shap in Cumbria, the trust has dispatched resources to the scene.
“We are currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services.
“Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible.”
