A new £250,000-a-year service for young people is being launched this week.

Street Talk, which involves youth workers from Trafford Council engaging with young people out on the streets, is part of the new Youth Engagement Service.

Young people in Trafford have been heavily involved in the development of the new service, including choosing the name. Street Talk had a soft launch in July 2019 and has already delivered over 50 sessions on the streets and parks across Trafford.  The service delivers a wide variety of activity up to seven days a week, 52 weeks a year and has already engaged with over 750 young people.

The hub for the new service is the newly refurbished Talkshop young people’s centre in the centre of Sale.  By making savings on premises costs, the Council has also been able to invest over £100k in redeveloping the Talkshop space to make it fit for the services young people want and require.

The new service is being launched on Thursday 7 November by Cllr Cath Hynes, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Children’s Services.

She said:

“This investment in our young people is fantastic news. We want a borough that can be enjoyed by residents or all ages and this goes a long way to deliver on that promise.

I am particularly delighted that young people are already working with youth workers in developing the new system. We want to enable young people to develop their own ideas and plans, and bring them to fruition. In that way, we can create an even better service that delivers, as well as helping to inspire new leaders and creators in the next generation.”
