The Conservative peer and supermarket boss Lord Rose has urged the Prime Minister to call a general election now, warning that the UK is falling behind other countries and needs a leader with a mandate who can “get on with it”

The peer told the Peston Show on ITV that “I would call an election, frankly, now… we are going backwards”

He added that “In terms of managing the economy, people think that Labour are more likely to be able to do a better job than the Conservatives”

“If you look at the last 14 years through a rearview mirror, it’s not been terribly exciting” he said suggesting that he could endorse the Labour Party

Rose also said that Sunak should hand back Frank Hester’s £10m donation, arguing politicians should look themselves in the mirror & say they’ve done the right thing
