As Barton Square at intu Trafford Centre nears completion, a time capsule has been buried to commemorate its £75m transformation.
Local children from nearby Barton Clough Primary School were asked to draw pictures of what they liked best about visiting the centre, with five pictures selected to go into the capsule.
Students Ismail Haider, Ume Cheema, Poppy Monks, Amber Cotton and Cody Sidebotham were invited to Barton Square to present their drawings, before putting them into the time capsule which was lowered into the ground.
Alison Niven, Centre Director, said: “In 1998, a time capsule was buried in the Main Dome to mark intu Trafford Centre’s opening, with letters and pictures from Barton Clough Primary School students placed into the capsule. In 2020, with the redevelopment of Barton Square, we want to continue to tell intu Trafford Centre’s story to future generations and we hope that the wonderful pictures drawn by the children will one day make somebody smile.”
As well as the drawings, the time capsule was filled with artefacts such as the day’s local newspaper, press clippings, recent photographs of the centre and staff, postcards and leaflets. The time capsule is designed to be open in 2120, in 100 years’ time.
intu Trafford Centre’s Barton Square has been undergoing an incredible £75m transformation for 18 months, adding over 110,000 sq ft and giving the space the wow-factor.
A two-storey Primark will open on 20 March, complete with exciting in-store services such as a Beauty Studio, Café and Customisation Lab. This will complement existing retail and leisure facilities already at Barton Square, including Next Home, Home Sense and Laura Ashley Home, as well as LEGOLAND Discovery Centre and SEA LIFE.
Shoppers will also soon be able to access intu Trafford Centre by tram, with the new Trafford Park Metrolink line scheduled to open this spring.
