Three breast cancer survivors from Manchester have published a compilation cookery book and are donating all proceeds to Prevent Breast Cancer – a Manchester based charity dedicated to predicting and preventing Breast Cancer.
Heather Glover, Roma Das and Jenny Ferguson met whilst participating in a Prevent Breast Cancer event celebrating women affected by breast cancer in October 2019. Their shared understanding led to friendship, and a desire to help the charity further. Then, over a cup of coffee a plan was hatched to produce a cookery book More Than A Manchester Tart, comprising of all their families and friends’ speciality recipes. A year later it’s finally ready to release on October 5th as part of Breast Cancer Awareness month.
“These recipes have stood the test of time for a good reason – they are delicious! We were after all those gems that no family and friends gathering is complete without Mums Welcome Home Stew or the secret to an Authentic Yorkshire Parkin.”
Heather reveals her favourite recipe from the book:
“Lockdown Inspired Flatbreads, I’ve made these so many times now – I always have the ingredients in the kitchen cupboard, they are deceptively easy and never fail to impress! Some of the dishes are a clever twist on old classics and in some ways the recent lockdown has been similar to days long gone when people had to be more thrifty with what they had in.”
“As our family and friendship groups spread far and wide you can imagine the result is wonderfully eclectic and diverse – thus our title!” says Roma.
The book consists of over 150 original recipes – Starters/Sides, Mains, Desserts and Bakes – plus a Handy Tips section. Some of Manchester’s Celebrities happily contributed to the recipe book too…though if you want to know whom and what, Roma teases, “You will have to buy the book!”
More Than a Manchester Tart is the trio’s chance to generate desperately needed funds for Prevent Breast Cancer – a small charity that supported them during difficult times. It is their way of giving back to the Wythenshawe based charity, which is the only charity in the UK dedicated to the prediction and prevention of breast cancer.
“We wanted to think of a way we could raise funds that didn’t necessarily mean climbing a mountain or running a marathon,” says Jenny. “We are total strangers to the world of publishing but these past 6 months we have jumped in and learnt the ‘hands on’ way.”
Luckily, their fun and banter was the perfect antidote to the perplexing moments. Cancer blights or destroys the lives of sufferers and their families – it was collectively important to them that something positive and worthy should counteract the consuming nature of the disease.
The book (£12.50 plus P&P) is available to order from their Facebook page More Than A Manchester Tart, and the PREVENT BREAST CANCER website www.
