The record-breaking engine is making a long-anticipated return to the line, bringing with it the unmistakable sights, sounds, and nostalgia of the Golden Age of steam travel.

This is a rare opportunity to see the engine up close and to feel the power and presence of one of Britain’s most iconic locomotives.

The legendary locomotive will be hosting passenger rides on 5th , 6th , 7th ,13th  and 14th  June, giving enthusiasts the unforgettable opportunity to travel behind this world-famous engine.

For those who prefer a closer look, the Flying Scotsman will be on static display on 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th, 12th June, offering the perfect chance to admire her up close and capture the charm of a national treasure.

First entering service in 1923, Flying Scotsman quickly became a British icon, representing the very best of steam-era innovation. She was the first steam locomotive officially recorded at 100 miles per hour, and over a century later, she continues to attract attention worldwide.

Her journey has not always been an easy one – from near-scrapping during the Beeching cuts of the 1960s and 70s, to multiple ownerships, global tours, and painstaking restorations.

Yet through it all, Flying Scotsman has remained a beloved part of the UK’s cultural heritage.

ELR has been privileged to play a key part in that story, providing the site where the Scotsman’s historic restoration took shape. Since then, her visits have drawn record crowds, and 2026 promises to be no exception.

On 5th, 6th and 13th June 2026, you can make the experience even more unforgettable with a luxury dining experience aboard one of our beautifully restored heritage carriages.

Guests will be treated to an evening of elegance and atmosphere, beginning with live music on arrival and a welcoming drink.

Once seated, enjoy a premium four-course silver service meal, lovingly prepared and served as the train glides through the scenic Irwell Valley.

Chairman of ELR, Mike Kelly, said: “We are delighted and proud to once again warmly welcome back the world’s most iconic locomotive, Flying Scotsman, as it returns to the East Lancashire Railway for a five-day visit in June.

“We have an exciting programme of events planned for all our visitors and enthusiasts to enjoy the unique experience of riding behind Flying Scotsman or visiting the footplate and creating wonderful memories.”

Timetables and tickets will be available soon on the East Lancashire Railway website.
