Now, his family has thanked people who have sent messages of condolence and paid tribute to him.

They said: “We would like to extend our deepest and most sincere thanks to the public for all of the messages of condolence, flowers and gifts that were sent as a tribute to Melvin.

“We would also like to thank all of those who attended vigils, lit a candle and carried out a good deed in his memory.

“We want you to know that these actions and messages of support, solidarity, humanity and compassion have been a great source of strength and comfort to us.

“Over the past four weeks we have been reading and hearing from so many people across all walks of life as to how Melvin touched their lives through his friendly nature and huge, cheeky smile or some kind words and help that changed their day for the better.

“We are still trying to process the tragic and painful events of Yom Kippur at Heaton Park Synagogue. There is a space in all of our lives that used to be filled by Melvin and we are missing him greatly.”
