74-year-old Stephen Glennie was hit by a car on Charlestown Road yesterday evening.

The driver of the car, a blue A Class Mercedes, a 28-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in police custody for questioning.

Charlestown Road was closed for a number of hours to allow officers to conduct their enquiries. It has since been fully reopened.

Paying tribute to Stephen, his family said: “He was the kind of person who would do anything for anyone.

“He was well known in the area and enjoyed going for a pint and loved to support Manchester City Football Club.”

Officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Police Constable Philip Shaw of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “My thoughts are with the man’s family during this sad time.

“A man has been arrested in connection with the fatality but we are still in the very early stages of our investigation. I’m keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision itself. Equally, I’m interested in speaking to anyone who may have seen the blue Mercedes driving prior to or after the collision.”
