A teenage boy has died and another is in hospital after the car they were travelling in failed to stop for police and smashed into a house in Burnage last night.

Police attempted to stop the Ford Fusion on Burnage Lane around 9.30, it failed to stop and was involved in a collision with a building at the junction of Burnage Lane and Lane End Road a short time later.

In line with usual policy, a referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), who have launched an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Detective Chief Superintendent Jon Chadwick, of GMP’s Professional Standards Branch, said: “I would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family of the person who has passed away following the collision in Burnage last night.

“The response to the incident is still ongoing and there are a number of road closures in place in the nearby area, with the scene likely to remain for some time.

“In line with our usual policy with incidents of this nature, we have made a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct and they have made a decision to launch an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.”
