The Government is expected to announce a tax hike for about 25 million people, in a move that would cap social-care costs for individuals and increase funding for the National Health Service.

Reports in this morning’s press suggest that Boris Johnson is next week expected to announce a manifesto-breaking tax hike to pay for the biggest overhaul in social care in a generation and bring down NHS waiting lists.

The prime minister’s office favours a 1% rise in the tax, says the Telegraph while the Treasury is possibly looking at a higher rate of up to 1.25%, according to the report.

In return, the government will cap the amount a person can spend on social-care costs during their lifetime, possibly at between £60,000 and £80,000.

Doing the media rounds this morning Justice Secretary Robert Buckland said that he would not “speculate” but said there should be a “grown-up conversation”.

“The British public are sensible enough to know that when it comes to the issue of social care we have to find some way in which it will be adequately funded,”
