A series of gigs, live streamed from Salford and recorded as live from Transylvania and beyond, will explore the links between classical and folk music, and the east and west of Europe.

Fortnightly from Sunday 28 February, four hour-long performances will be streamed live from The Wood Rooms studio in Swinton. Acts include Michael Cretu with members of Manchester International Root Orchestra and Folktone band, whose set seeks to uncover the mutual influences between Beethoven and his Hungarian Romani contemporary, gypsy violin virtuoso János Bihari.

A series of gigs, recorded as live from locations around Transylvania, Hungary and the Carpathian Basin, will then run from Sunday 18 April.

Góbé, an experimental six-piece folk outfit from Budapest will kick off the globetrotting second half of the programme, with further acts to be confirmed.

The free programme has been produced by Góbéfest, the UK’s only free weekend-long festival to celebrate the music, dance, culture, food and drink of the legendary region of Transylvania. It has been taking place in Manchester since 2017.

Dates for this year’s festival have been confirmed as Friday 21-Sunday 23 May, though organisers don’t yet know whether the event will take place wholly online, or if some socially distanced gigs will be possible.

Keep up to date here.
