Rishi Sunak’s plans to deport illegal immigrants to Rwanda have suffered a set back tonight aftee peers in the House of Lords votedthrough Lord Hope’s and Lord Browne’s amendments to the Rwanda Bill covering whether Rwanda is a safe country and the position of Afghan interpreters.

The vote means that Sunak’s plans for the legislation to be ratified this week will have to be abandoned with MP’s now being forced back on Monday or Tuesday next week to see if the Government can force the plan through Parliament

One of the amendments will require the independent monitoring committee has to declare Rwanda a safe county.

Earlier MP’s had rejected a proposed amendment that those who worked with the UK military or govt overseas, such as Afghan interpreters, be exempted from removal to Rwanda.

However Peers backed the Labour peer Lord Browne’s amendment to the Rwanda Bill stating that those who have served the British Army – such as Afghan interpreters – should be exempt from deportation,

Greater Manchester MP Andrew Gwynne wrote on X

Ministers can tour the airwaves parroting Number 10 lines all they like, but they can’t run from the fact that the Rwanda scheme is a scandalous waste of public money.
