The Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has promised to halve the rate of inflation, grow the economy, make sure the national debt shrinks, ensure NHS waiting lists fall and pass new laws to crackdown on the migrant Channel crossings crisis.

“They are your government’s priorities, and we will either have achieved them or not. No tricks, no ambiguity. We’re either delivering for you or we’re not.” he said

In his first major speech of the New Year he said he would ease the cost of living and give people financial security

He also hinted that the government may take a softer line against striking workers
imagination and confidence to do things differently and better”.

“We need to change the way our country works. That requires a change in mindset.” and added

“I believe that if you work hard and play by the rules, you should be rewarded and which is why as soon as we can, the government will reduce the burden of taxation of working people.”

In response the Labour Party said

The do-nothing Prime Minister is too weak to stand up to his party or vested interests. That means that from housing and planning laws to closing tax avoidance loopholes, he can’t take the big decisions to put the country first.

“For weeks this speech was hyped up as his big vision – now he’s delivered it, the country is entitled to ask: is that it?”

Sir Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, said Rishi Sunak’s speech this afternoon had demonstrated that he “still doesn’t have a proper plan to deal with the crisis raging in the NHS”.

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham tweeted

The PM rightly talks about the importance of “good, well-paid” jobs.Does that include the NHS and other essential public services?
