More than 18,500 licensed taxi and private hire drivers across Greater Manchester are being encouraged to take just 10 minutes that could help save a life.

NHS Greater Manchester and local licensing services have launched a new suicide awareness training course tailored for the trade as part of the Shining a Light on Suicide campaign.

The free online course, developed by the Zero Suicide Alliance, helps drivers spot signs of distress, start conversations, and signpost to support.

Since launching the training, uptake has continued to grow – a clear sign that drivers are stepping up to support the mental wellbeing of their communities. With thousands of daily interactions across the region, each journey is an opportunity to make a real difference.

One Salford-based driver, Rob Berrisford, says the training has already changed how he sees his role:

“even a small conversation can mean a lot to someone who’s having a tough time”.
