With customers facing the sight of empty shelves as toilet roll, pasta, hand sanitiser and tinned foods, supermarkets are urging the public to stop panic buying.

Speaking on behalf of retailers, Helen Dickinson, chief executive of the British Retail Consortium (BRC), said: “In the face of unprecedented demand as a result of coronavirus, food retailers have come together to ask their customers to support each other to make sure everyone can get access to the products they need.”

Tesco are limiting customers to buying no more than five of certain goods, including anti-bacterial gels, wipes and sprays, dry pasta, UHT milk and some tinned vegetables.

Aldi released a statement yesterday saying

“As we have seen an unprecedented demand across our range, we will be limiting customer purchases to four units on all products to ensure all of our customers have an opportunity to purchase them. We thank you all for your patience during this time”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has urged people to “behave responsibly and think about others”.
