Mykonos, Marbella and… Manchester? You’ve probably never heard those three places mentioned in the same sentence before, but we’re here to tell you why Manchester is a worthy staycation for Brits looking to holiday closer to home this year.

Although there’s no guarantee of glorious sunshine for 300 days a year, Manchester has a lot more to offer for those looking to see the sights. From its rich sporting history to the city’s classy cosmopolitan vibes, here’s why you should add Manchester to your staycation list.

It’s steeped in history

Manchester’s earliest recorded history dates back to a Roman civilian settlement around 79 AD. In fact, Manchester’s name as we know it today even comes from the famous Roman fort of Mancunium. If you’re interested in learning a little more about the city’s Roman origins, you’ll absolutely want to pay a visit to the old Roman fort and the wall remnant by Castlefield.

From 79 AD through to the Industrial Revolution, there’s so much to history to discover when visiting Manchester. We recommend joining a free walking tour of the city!

You’re never too far from sporting royalty

It’s no secret that Manchester is famous for its sporting legends. From Manchester United’s treble-winning side of 1998/99 to Manchester City’s modern-day dominance, there’s so much to see and do as a sports fan in Manchester.

Manchester is also home to the National Football Museum, National Cycling Centre (a pivotal part of British Cycling’s Olympic success) and Old Trafford Cricket Ground (home of the famous Lancashire County Cricket Club).

There’s a real cosmopolitan buzz about the city

Step aside Barcelona and Milan! Often dubbed the cosmopolitan capital of the North, Manchester is all the fun of a European city but a little closer to home.

From the city’s shopping quarters to the bustling food and drink scene, there’s a real cosmopolitan vibe about modern-day Manchester that’s channelled through its creative culture. At the heart of it is Spinningfields, an elegant development that is now a hotspot for entertainment, shopping and dining. There’s also the bustling Northern Quarter for those looking for somewhere a little more casual.

You’re never too far from the rolling countryside

If you’re looking for a staycation that combines urban exploration with a countryside retreat, Manchester is the place to be. Situated just a short drive or train journey from the Peak District National Park, along with plenty of other rural towns and villages just a stone’s throw away, it’s really easy to escape the city for a day or two (if that’s what you’re into).

Everyone is welcome

Mancunians certainly are a friendly bunch and Manchester is a city that prides itself on being inclusive. From the world-famous Manchester Pride Festival to the city’s annual International Festival, there really is a place for everyone in Manchester.

Planning a trip to Manchester this summer?

The weather changes from one day to the next in Manchester, so you’ll need to pack an umbrella and a pair of sunglasses! We’re big fans of Manchester-based sunglasses brand Arlo Wolf if you need a little inspiration.

Weather aside, plenty of entertainment and dining venues have reopened following their initial closure during the COVID-19 outbreak. Just don’t forget to bring a face mask!
