resident at a care home in Cheadle gave valuable life advice as she toasted a special milestone.

Joyce Preston celebrated her 100th birthday in style at Care UK’s Abney Court, in Abney Hall Park, on 20th March, and attributed her impressive longevity to her staying single and having fun.

Joyce was born in Stockport on 20th March 1924. Never marrying, Joyce focused on her career at the Shirley Institute, a research centre for the cotton industry, where she became head of the office in Didsbury. Travelling on cruises with her close friends, Joyce visited many countries, particularly loving the Middle East. Always having a passion for singing, she spent many years performing with her local choir.

On the big day, the team at Abney Court hosted a special party for Joyce, complete with a birthday cake specially prepared by the Head Chef. As part of the celebrations, the choir that Joyce was a part of put on a magical performance.

Joyce said: “I really enjoyed the day, especially seeing my friends and family. I loved the choir – it brought back memories of my time in the choir. That made my day.”

Zoe Smart, Home Manager at Abney Court, said: “It was an honour to celebrate Joyce’s birthday with her. She is a beloved resident at Abney Court, and we all had a lovely time celebrating this tremendous milestone.

“Everything we do centres around supporting residents to live fulfilling lives, which is why we are always eager to mark special occasions. Joyce’s 100th birthday was no exception, and it was a delight to hear her sound advice for living a long and happy life and all about her travels in her younger years.”
