Labour leader Sir Kier Starmer has announces plan for a new taxpayer-owned company to invest in renewable energy.

He hopes that it will eventually be of a size equivalent to France’s EDF

Speaking to the Labour Party conference in Liverpool he said that the renewable company to harness sea, wind, waves which will also have the option for nuclear

It would be funded through £8.3bn national wealth fund.

Critiquing the Government he said “Their plan fails to account for need to deliver clean power. We have a fossils feel crisis and they double down. Renewables are 9x cheaper & investing in them the way to get proper energy independence & lower bills”

He committed to 100% clean power by 2030 under a Labour government

During the speech Starmer said that that an “unwritten contract” with the British people has been broken by the Conservatives as families worry about whether their children will have a better future

He insisted “don’t forget, don’t forgive” as he accused the Conservatives of losing control of the economy and said that Britain “can’t go on like this”, adding: “What we’ve seen in the past few days has no precedent.”

In Government he pledged to stick to tight fiscal rules and admits: “It means not being able to do things, good Labour things, as quickly as we would like.”

‘We should be clear about what that means. It means not being able to do things as quickly as we might like

‘If you lose control of the economy then you lose the ability to do anything. Working people pay the price’

The Labour leader concluded by claiming Labour are the “party of the centre-ground” and the Tories will “stop at nothing” in a bid for a fifth term.

He said: “We need to be prepared, disciplined, focused, spend each day working to earn the trust of the British people.”yea
