Snow is causing havoc on Pennine routes this morning

There are severe delays on the M62 east between J20 Rochdale & J22 Saddleworth as heavy snowfall overnight has led to significant accumulations settling on the carriageway.

Overnight and early this morning drivers found themselves in three hour queues as snow forced the closure of lanes in both directions across the Pennines

Many Transpennine routes remain closed including the A57 Snake Pass,A62 Austerlands-Standedge,A624 Chunal,A628 Woodhead Pass, A635 Greenfield -Holmfirth,A640 Newhey-Denshaw-Outlane, A672 Grains Bar-Denshaw-M62,A6024 Holme Moss and A6052 Denshaw-Delph

There are currently no rail services between New Mills and Sheffield due to a tree on the line and no services between Buxton and Hazel Grove due to the weather. Anyone travelling by train should check the latest information with their rail operator or Network Rail.

Snowfall is also affected bus services, particularly in Oldham, and passengers are advised to check with their operator before travelling.

There are currently no significant issues affecting Metrolink services.

TfGM’s Head of Resilience, Lucy Kennon, said: “Heavy snowfall is making driving conditions particularly hazardous in parts of Greater Manchester and beyond and is also impacting some public transport services.

“The snow also means footpaths will also be slippery and we’re urging caution for anyone needing to travel this morning.

“We’d encourage people to only travel if necessary and for those that are to plan their journey beforehand.”

An amber warning for snow and ice remains in place across Northern England until midday
