Six statues in Manchester are to begin talking later this summer as part of a project to tell tales of the past through the voices of recognisable British actors and words from our best writers.

The statues that will come to life will be Queen Victoria in Piccadilly Gardens, Alan Turing in Sackville Square, Lowry in Sam’s Chop House, Abraham Lincoln in Brazenose Street, Barbirolli, outside Bridgewater Hall and the Reading Girl in the Central Library.

In order to hear the statues speak, people will need to swipe their smartphones over signs beneath the statues to access the monologues.

Amongst the voices heard will be Prunella Scales as Queen Victoria and Tom Conti as Abraham Lincoln.

The project, also taking place in London, is being put together by Sing London, a non-profit arts organisation, who among previous projects had installed ping pong tables for public use, with the intention of purely lifting the nation’s spirits and will begin on the 19th August.
