The former Chief Executive of Manchester City Council is to be honoured from today.

The footway which is to bear his name from Friday, starts at the South East perimeter of the Etihad Stadium and leads to and spans the Nexen Tire bridge connecting to the City Football Academy and wider community facilities of East Manchester.
Sir Howard Bernstein Way, signified with an accompanying mosaic, has been designed to permanently and visually represent the significant contribution that Sir Howard has made to the Club, East Manchester and its people.
The mosaic, created by local artist and Manchester City fan Mark Kennedy, features a selection of iconic landmarks from the city to celebrate the breadth and depth of Sir Howard’s achievements and his championing of key Manchester projects.

Included in the mosaic are images of Manchester Town Hall, Beetham Tower, Urbis, and the Etihad Stadium, the development of the latter triggered by the securing of the 2002 Commonwealth Games, part of Sir Howard’s wider vision of sports led regeneration for the city.

Sir Howard’s work in East Manchester in particular, laid the foundations for the further development of facilities around the Etihad Stadium including the City Football Academy and a wider collection of new community education, sports and leisure facilities.
Commenting on Sir Howard Bernstein’s impact on the city of Manchester, Manchester City Chairman, Khaldoon Al Mubarak stated:

“Sir Howard Bernstein’s passion for the city of his birth, combined with his unrivalled vision, humanity and humility, have undoubtedly helped to shape Manchester into what it is today.

“All of us who love Manchester, whether lifelong Mancunians, or relative newcomers to the city like me, owe him a substantial debt of gratitude.

“There is no more fitting a place to recognise his contribution than in the footway and bridge that links the stadium, whose creation was instigated by him, to the City Football Academy and surrounding community developments that were fundamentally supported by him”.
