Five Manchester MPs have written to the Government to say they would not support Manchester being put under tier three lockdown restrictions

Lucy Powell, Mike Kane, Jeff Smith, Afzal Khan and Graham Stringer say in the letter that large case numbers in the city are largely among students and so safely “confined” in halls of residence.

They also say hospitality firms “constitute a very small proportion of infection rates” so they want powers to shut individual companies that are not COVID-secure but warn the government closing all pubs, bars and restaurants would be “devastating” for jobs.

And they dispute the evidence that has been presented by the Government that the hospitality sector is behind the surge in cases
