Sir Kier Starmer’s Shadow Cabinet reshuffle has seen a promotion for one Greater Manchester MP,a demotion for another and a stepping down for one more

Deputy leader Angela Rayner has been given the role of Shadow Levelling up Secretary replacing Wigan MP Lisa Nandy while Oldham’s Jim McMahon is stepped down as shadow environment secretary, saying: “After a testing year I want to focus on getting my health back to full strength”.

In a statement on twitter the Oldham MP said

“As the reshuffle begins, I have written to Keir to take the opportunity to step down from the Shadow Cabinet.
I have been and remain a firm supporter of Keir and the project we have built to offer Britain an electable Labour government after 13 wasted years under the Conservatives.

Rayner has also been formally named as the shadow deputy prime minister while Nandy has been demoted from her shadow secretary of state role and will now serve as shadow cabinet minister for international development.

Steve Reed has been moved from his role as shadow justice secretary to become the new shadow environment secretary, taking over from Jim McMahon

Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell has been appointed Shadow Leader of the House of Commons.

She tweeted

“Pleased to be given this important role ahead of the next election, shaping & driving the next Labour Government’s first King’s Speech & programme, and holding the current government to account in parliament.“
