Tory MP Simon Clarke has called for the party to sack Rishi Sunak and change leader again .

“The unvarnished truth is that Rishi Sunak is leading the Conservatives into an election where we will be massacred.”

Writing in the Telegraph Clarke said that while Mr Sunak has many admirable qualities, “he does not get what Britain needs and he is not listening to what the British people want”.

Clarke was chief secretary to the Treasury when Mr Sunak was chancellor and served as levelling up secretary under Liz Truss, is the most senior Tory to call publicly for a change of leader.

Some Senior Tory sources think that Sir Simon Clarke’s call for the PM to go is linked to the mysterious MRP poll in last week’s Telegraph, predicting a Labour landslide.

“We have a clear choice. Stick with Rishi Sunak, take the inevitable electoral consequences, and give the Left a blank cheque to change Britain as they see fit.
Or we can change leader, and give our country and party a fighting chance.”

Senior Tory MP David Davis wrote on X

This is getting silly. The Party and the country are sick and tired of MPs putting their own leadership ambitions ahead of the UK’s best interests.

Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell said
that Sir Simon Clarke’s attempts to get the PM to step down are “like an episode of the Traitors- I can’t keep up with who’s a Traitor and who’s a Faithful and who is going to be banished and who isn’t. It’s just actually not that interesting any more.”
