Anas Sarwar, the Scottish Labour leader, has called on Keir Starmer to resign as prime minister.
“The distraction has to end and the leadership in Downing Street has to change.” said Sarwar in another day of the moving political story following the fallout from the Peter Mandelson documents adding that first his first priority “is to my country, Scotland”.
Keir Starmer is a decent man… I need to decide what I’m willing to accept and what I’m willing to tolerate.” he said butt added that he won’t back any candidate if there is a leadership contest. “I’m not supporting or backing any alternative”.
There is much disquiet around the announcement, a very senior Scottish Labour source told Sky News that the move by Sarwar is “idiocy, immature, incoherent and self defeating. Bad for the country, playing into our opponents hands, and without any idea of an end game.”
Downing Street has responded
“Keir Starmer is one of only four Labour leaders ever to have won a general election.
“He has a clear five-year mandate from the British people to deliver change, and that is what he will do.” and various cabinet ministers have announced their support
