The club was wound up of a debt of £700,000 to His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs with total debts of over a million pounds

The underfire owners decided not to fight the case after multiple adjournments

In a statement the club said

We regret to inform stakeholders, supporters and partners that Salford Red Devils and its operating company, Salford City Reds (2013) Limited, have been subject to a winding-up petition filed by HMRC, and liquidation proceedings have now commenced.

We, understand the gravity of this situation and the uncertainty this creates for everyone connected with the club.

For the original club staff that remained up until this point, this is an incredibly emotional moment. Whilst there is sadness in seeing things come to this point, there is also a sense of relief that an extremely challenging period for the club has finally come to an end. We want to express our heartfelt thanks to all the fans who have stood by us through everything. Your passion and loyalty have meant the world to us. More than anything, we hope that the club’s proud name and history can live on and continue to represent the people of Salford.

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, and Paul Dennett, City Mayor of Salford in a joint statement said:

Today’s decision by the courts to liquidate Salford Red Devils (2013) Limited marks the end of a painful chapter in the club’s 152-year history.

We understand that today will be concerning for those who are connected to the club; however, we believe that this is a positive decision and is a step in the right direction in securing the future of this proud institution of rugby league.

This club is vitally important to the Salford community and beyond, and it is a travesty that this has been allowed to go on for as long as it has. We would like to thank the fan groups who have engaged with us throughout this process. Their commitment to their club has been a passionate driver in getting to where they are today”

They added:

”We support the decision that the Rugby Football League (RFL) has made in terminating the existing membership for Salford Red Devils, and the RFL Board will be meeting tomorrow (December 4) to discuss the details of the processes for membership of a new club.”

“Earlier this week, we had constructive conversations about the future ownership of the club. It is now entirely for the RFL to determine who is best placed to take forward a new Salford Club. We believe that the RFL now has the correct governance procedures and leadership in place to make this decision, and we are optimistic that there will be a Salford team playing in the Championship in January 2026.”
