The Rochdale MP Tony Lloyd has died at the age of 74 his family have announced

In a statement his family said that

We are absolutely devastated to announce the death of Sir Tony Lloyd MP, our beloved ‘Joe’, ‘Dad’ and ‘Grandad’. He died peacefully this morning surrounded by his family, as was his wish.

He was working until a few days before his death as his passion was helping others. He devoted his life to serving and making a difference to the lives of those he met including his constituents, colleagues, friends, and family.

We would like to thank all the dedicated doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants and other hospital staff who have provided him with care, as well as the blood and platelet donors who gave him an extra four years of life.

Sir Anthony Joseph Lloyd MP 1950-2024, a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. A life well lived. May he rest in peace.

The MP announced last week that he was leaving hospital after being treated for blood cancer which he said was now incurable

Fellow Greater Manchester MP and Deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner tweeted

“I’m heartbroken. Tony was not just a kind colleague, but a dedicated friend and rock of support to so many of us, thinking of his constituents right to the end. His loss is deeply felt by the whole Labour family.”

Gorton MP Afzal Khan tweeted

“Tony was a lovely man, and a brilliant and compassionate politician who has touched the lives of everyone in Greater Manchester.“

Andrew Gwynne another Greater Manchester MP said

“I’m absolutely devastated by this news. Tony was the finest of public servants, a true gentleman and a hero.“

Labour leader Keir Starmer called it a “terrible loss”, and expressed his “deepest condolences” to his family. He praised Lloyd’s “devotion to his country”.

Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves said: “I am deeply saddened to hear the news of Tony Lloyd’s death.

“He dedicated his life to public service and improving the lives of the people he served. I will miss his friendship and his advice. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.”
