A specialist nurse at Stepping Hill Hospital is part of a team who have won a national award for their efforts in increasing efficiency in wound care across Greater Manchester.

Lisa Gough is a tissue viability nurse and member of the Greater Manchester Health & Social Care Partnership’s Procurement Team, who have won the Highly Commended prize in the ‘Project of the Year – under 20m’ category of the UK National GO Excellence in Public Procurement Awards 2020, which celebrate the best in public procurement in the delivery of public services across the country.

The team won for ‘The GM Wound Care Formulary project’ which standardised the purchasing of wound care products such as adhesive dressings and bandages across Greater Manchester, ensuring care such as the treatment of pressure ulcers is being held to the same high standards throughout the area, and also making significant savings in the purchasing of the products used.

As well as improving efficiency in purchasing and recruitment, the formulary also ensures clinicians providing wound care follow the same tested plans in wound care, helping to reduce rates of infection, not just in hospitals but also in community and care home settings. With the support of Stockport NHS Foundation Trust’s procurement team, Lisa was able to bring her years of experience of wound care at Stepping Hill Hospital to the team to ensure the formulary worked as well as possible. The example of the project is now beginning to be followed across the UK.

Grahame Steed, Lead Judge for the GO Awards Programme, said: “Right now, procurement is front-page news with public service delivery at the forefront of economic recovery. That is why this year, it was more important than ever for our GO Awards to take place, and once again recognise the people and organisations making great procurement happen. Congratulations to all our highly commended and winning organisations, including the Greater Manchester Health & Social Care Partnership’s Procurement team , on their well-deserved success.”
