Almost 300,000 people with cancer symptoms in England waited more than the two-week maximum to see an oncologist between April and November last year

It is the highest level on record.

The Prime Minister has announced  two new targets for the time within which people should be able to get a diagnosis for possible cancer.

A Government spokesman said that the government was committing to clearing the backlog of patients waiting more than two months for cancer treatment by March 2023

The spokesman also said that the government wanted to ensure that by 2028 75% of people with cancer get diagnosed when it is at stage one or stage two.

Shadow Health spokesman Wes Streeting said that cancer care “is in crisis”.

“A terrifyingly large numbers of people are waiting longer than they should to receive vital cancer care and treatment, with the insecurity of not knowing”
