The public inquiry into the Manchester Arena bombing is to start today after being delayed due to the trial of the the bombers brother

Chaired by Sir John Saunders it is being held at Manchester Magistrates Court, Covid restrictions will mean that physical presence at the hearings will be restricted

The Inquiry will investigate the deaths of the victims of the 2017 Manchester Arena attack and will have the same scope as the Inquests.

Among its expected outcome will look at what authorities knew about Salman and Hashem Abedi and if mistakes were made.

Hashem Abedi was given a minimum jail term of 55-years after a jury decided he had built the bomb with his brother that killed 22 people at the end of the Ariana Grande concert in May 2017.

The inquiry is expected to last for about four months, will hear testimony from a wide variety of witnesses, including some who were at the arena on the night of the attack and some who helped in the emergency response.

It will also hear, in losed sessions, from the security services about what was known about Salman Abedi and what steps were taken in relation to him.

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham has described today as

“ a significant day for everyone in Greater Manchester. We are thinking of all the families this morning as they set out down what will be a very difficult road. We will do everything we can to support them and get the answers for which they have waited so long.“
