The Justice Minister David Lammy has announced that prison officers are to be given body armour and tasers as a defence against serious escalations of attacks in Britain’s jails
The move follows recent attacks on officers by prisoners including the Manchester Arena bomb plotter Hashem Abedi and the Southport killer Axel Rudakubana
He told the BBC this morning that
“We cannot have our brave prison officers facing assaults and attacks like we saw at HMP Frankland. That’s why we’re equipping them with the body armour and tasers they need to stay safe – as they keep the rest of us safe.“
500 officers are to be trained in taser use as part of a £15m scheme to enhance security in Britain’s jails
