The Prestwich born actress Julie Stevens known for amongst other things the Carry on Films, the Avengers and Play School has died at the age of 87 after a battle against Parkinson’s disease

Perhaps best known for her time on Play School, a vocalist for Look and Read songs and as a semi-regular in The Avengers, she appeared in Carry on Cleo alongside Kenneth Williams

An ABC Weekend Television announcer, .Julie was part of BBC’s Play School for 14 years and Play Away for 8 years. She got the job thanks to fellow presenter and friend Rick Jones.

She played the fun, lovable Venus Smith in The Avengers.

Paying tribute her daughter Rachel New said her mother will be remembered for her “joyful spirit, her ability to make every child feel seen, and her lasting legacy in the world of children’s television”

Stevens was also known for comedy shows Girls About Town and Cabbages And Kings as well as Play Away, a series for older children, and appeared on Holby City.

She leaves behind her two children, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren.”
