Greater Manchester Transport bosses are advising people to travel only if necessary as the region during next week’s heatwave.

With temperatures set to rise sharply, peaking at a scorching 35 degrees in Greater Manchester on Tuesday, both roads and public transport services could be affected.

On Monday and Tuesday, a 12-minute service will operate across the Metrolink network.

This is to ensure that they can operate a reliable and frequent service. They will operate as many double services as possible to provide additional capacity and space on board.

They are advising people to carry plenty of water and, if possible, a fan and too consider travelling at quieter times when services are less busy and to keep an eye out for other passengers offering them a seat if required.

Metrolink will operate as normal over the weekend – Saturday and Sunday, although passengers are advised to ensure that they take precautions based on the potential for high temperatures.

The Met Office upgraded its alert from amber to red for a wide swathe of the country including Greater Manchester as the extent of next week’s predicted heatwave became clearer.

The NHS is expecting a surge in patients.
