Supporters of the assisted dying bill going through the House of Commons at the moment are proposing that cases should be signed off by a panel of experts rather than just a High Court judge

Labour MP Kim Leadbeater said that ‘By adding these extra safeguards that is a real improvement to the Bill’

MPs on the committee have heard from witnesses who say courts would be overwhelmed if high court judges had to decide each case.

However opponents of the bill say the changes are removing safeguards The key safeguard that was used to persuade MPs who raised valid questions about the bill has now been dropped.

Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Olney, who is opposed to a bill on assisted dying told BBC Breakfast that ‘To make this really profound change makes it difficult to decide whether this is the right thing or not’
