One in five adults under 30 in the north west say they will have to rely on charity this Christmas.

Despite half being in full-time jobs, many live hand to mouth with those in work just as likely as the unemployed to say they need charity support.

One in six are also behind with their rent or mortgage, and the church and charity is warning that with the rise in the cost of living, many young people are on the cliff edge of homelessness.

David Taylor, Divisional Commander for The Salvation Army in the North West said: “We’re expecting the need for our support to be greater than ever this year after the turbulent times that many within our community have faced.

“With the £20 cut a week to universal credit and the cost of living increasing dramatically, our officers on the front line are seeing more and more people pushed into poverty and it’s the young people within our communities that are the hardest hit, suffering the most.

“Christmas is a time of joy and celebration, however for many it brings added expense and unwanted stress. The Salvation Army are ready to help whoever is in need, whether it be with Christmas presents, food hampers or companionship. Our doors are always open.”
