Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell has told the Guardian that there “no magic bullet here for us. We are in a difficult world.”

Interviewed while on the campaign trail in Leeds over the weekend ahead of this week’s local elections Labour’s Deputy said

“I strongly believe that we’ve got the right agenda to start turning things around. To give people hope, an opportunity and see the change in their communities.”

With much political noise around leadership bids including Greater Manchester’s Mayor Andy Burnham Powell said she would not engage in leadership speculation but refused to get involved in whether Kier Starmer was the right leader

Powell though said:

“I strongly believe that we’ve got the right agenda to start turning that around. To give people hope, an opportunity and see the change in their communities.”

The stakes she said were high for the country

“If we get that wrong, then Nigel Farage is walking into Downing Street. We can all pretend that one switch over here would magically transform that. I just don’t believe that,” she said.
