There will be no further COVID restrictions before the New Year

Health Secretary Sajid Javid told journalists: “We look at the data on a daily basis — that hasn’t changed over the Christmas period. But there will be no further measures before the new year.” He urged people to “remain cautious” ahead of New Year’s parties by taking lateral flow tests and celebrating outside where possible.

Ministers will look again in the new year, he said, at whether further safeguards are needed.

Government sources said that the booster shot program was “fundamental” to how Omicron impacts the country, and that yesterday’s briefing to the Prime Minister from Chris Whitty and Patrick Vallance brought home the “stark” picture of how many patients requiring intensive therapy for COVID are drawn from the unvaccinated population.

According to NHS Providers’ Chris Hopson the number of patients with COVID-19 in English hospitals “is definitely rising, but not precipitately so.”
