Rochdale MP, Tony Lloyd, is calling for decent pay rise to stop workers leaving the NHS.
Tony said, “There has been a staffing crisis in the NHS long before the very first case of Covid. Healthcare staff are feeling intense pressures, having worked incredibly hard during the pandemic they now face the vast challenge of clearing the backlog of care caused by it.
But after years of pay freezes and below-inflation pay rises – not to mention the spread of in-work poverty during the cost of living crisis – is it little wonder that many are now leaving NHS employment?
We must act sooner rather than later. That’s why I’m calling on the government for a decent pay rise for NHS staff which aims to boost recruitment and retention.”
Tony has written an Early Day Motion calling for this as inflation reaches a 40-year high. It has gathered support from 48 cross-party MPs. The motion ” further calls for embedding the real living wage as a benchmark and a dedicated retention package focused on encouraging existing, experienced NHS staff at all levels to stay in post.”
