A murder investigation has been launched after a man who was seriously assaulted in Wythenshawe on Thursday evening has died in hospital

The man who is in his 20’s, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after the assault on Wythenshawe Road .

A 39-year-old man and 42-year-old woman who were arrested yesterday have since been released under investigation.

A 33-year-old man has been arrested today and remains in police custody for questioning.

Detective Chief Inspector Alan Clitherow, of GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “This was a vicious assault which has ultimately resulted in the death of a man and the launch of a murder investigation. Our thoughts are with the man’s loved ones – to whom I send my condolences at this unimaginable time.

“Dedicated officers, from the Major Incident Team and City of Manchester district, are working incredibly hard to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident. They have already spoken to witnesses who have described seeing the victim being assaulted by two men – one is described as white and the other is described as black or mixed race. I would like to use this opportunity to further our appeal for anyone else who was in the area at the time of the incident and saw or heard anything which may assist us with our enquiries to contact us as a matter of urgency.

“News like this is, understandably, distressing for those who live in the local community but I want to provide some reassurance by saying that initial enquiries suggest this was an isolated incident and we are doing everything we can in what is a very fast-moving investigation. There will be an increased police presence in the area over the weekend and I would encourage anyone with concerns to speak to those officers.”
