Hotel group Motel One has successfully implemented sustainability measures across all its hotels, meaning that all rooms are powered by 100% green electricity – a total of 2,194 rooms across the UK.

Headquartered in Germany, the hotel group has eight hotels in the UK after expanding into the market in 2013. The commitment to green energy is part of Motel One’s goal to sustainably improve the environment through its business activities, in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Ahead of the curve, Motel One has been committed to reducing its carbon footprint since 2014 and since then the group has decreased emissions from overnight stays by 47%.

In addition to 100% green electricity, the hotel group is implementing measures that go beyond simply enhancing recycling programmes and moving from plastic cups to recyclable ones. Progressive measures include provision of natural cosmetics free of micro plastics, certification of sustainable buildings, conversion of company fleet to electric vehicles and updating travel guidelines to encourage public transport, with plans to extend further sustainability measures that have been successful in Germany and Austria.

To save on energy, Motel One ensures that guest rooms are heated and cooled using energy-efficient convection fans and solar and heat-control glass to prevent them from getting too warm, reducing the amount of air-conditioning needed.

As a result, the Motel One London-Tower Hill has been certified with BREEAM Excellent.

Daniel Müller, Co-CEO of Motel One, said: “Opening Motel One hotels in the UK in 2013 was an obvious next step for our company. With that comes responsibility to care for the environment in which we operate, and we’ve always been passionate about powering our hotels through 100% green electricity.
