Firefighters are continuing to battle two moorland fires on the outskirts of Greater Manchester

On Dovestones Reservoir the operation is now in its fifth day and crews have been working hard throughout the night and have made progress, as they continue to respond to wildfires at Dovestone and Swineshaw.

The operations are currently focused on containing these fires, reducing hotspots and continuing to keep people safe.

Specialist units, fire engines and support crews remain on site at both areas supported by partner agencies. Air support is also being used to assist firefighting efforts where conditions allow.

“While progress has been made in both the Dovestone area, where a fire began on Saturday evening, and at Swineshaw, which we have been dealing with since yesterday, this remains a complex and active incident. People are asked to continue avoiding affected areas to allow emergency services to work safely and effectively.” say the service

The fire at Swineshaw is a separate incident from the ongoing wildfire at Dovestone, although both continue to require a multi-agency response.

“Smoke from the wildfires may continue to affect some nearby communities. If you can see or smell smoke, remain avoiding affected areas where possible. Stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed. Once smoke has cleared from your area, ventilate your home by opening windows and doors. People are also encouraged to keep hydrated during the current warm weather and follow any existing health management plans if they have asthma or other respiratory conditions.”

People are advised to continue avoid travelling to the Dovestone and Swineshaw areas and should not enter any closed areas. Please keep access routes clear to allow emergency services and partner agencies to continue their work safely.

The current dry and warm conditions significantly increases the risk of wildfires. Anyone visiting the countryside is urged to dispose of litter responsibly, avoid using barbecues, campfires or any naked flames, never discard cigarettes on the ground, and follow any local restrictions and safety advice.

Greater Manchester Firefighters have thanked the public for their support

In a message posted on social media they wrote:

“We’re incredibly grateful for the kindness and generosity being shown by local communities during the Dovestone Reservoir fire.

Our firefighters have everything they need to carry out their response to this incident safely, and we are not asking for any donations of food, drinks or equipment.

The best way you can support our crews is by avoiding the area, following public safety advice and allowing emergency services and partner agencies to continue their work.

Thank you for your continued support.”
