Kier Starmer has turned down Donald Trump’s request to send ships to the Strait of Hormuz

France, Germany and South Korea are also not ready to deploy ships. Japan and Australia have likewise said they do not plan to send naval forces to the Middle East to escort vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump has meanwhile warned that Nato would face a “very bad” future if allies did not help with the Strait of Hormuz

Interviewed this morning on Sky News Pat McFadden said of the decision

“It’s a very transactional presidency, and our job is to navigate this, to always remember that the friendship between the United States and the United Kingdom runs very deep. It’s a good relationship. It’s enduring, and I think it will outlast all the personalities involved.”
