People living in Moston and Harpurhey are being urged to get tested after the new variant of Covid-19 which was identified in Moss Side last week, has been discovered

The new areas are within the M40 and M9 postcodes of the city.

A dedicated new testing unit set up in Ebsworth Street car park in Moston and will be open from midday on Wednesday before running between 10am and 5pm, seven days a week, from Thursday.

Further sites will be announced in the coming days.

Street teams will also be knocking on doors in Moston and Harpurhey to ask people over the age of 16 to take a test.

This enhanced community testing is for people who don’t have symptoms.

For those people who are unable to attend a test site, home test kits will be delivered to their homes.

There is currently no evidence that this mutation causes more severe illness, or that the vaccine would not protect against it say the council, but they need to investigate whether the strain has spread further and testing is a crucial part of this.
