A mass burial site containing around 440 graves has been found in the Ukrainian city of Izyum after it was liberated from Russian control.

Deputy Police Chief of Kharkiv Oblast Serhii Bolvinov told Sky News that the bodies individually buried at the makeshift site would be exhumed and taken away for forensic examination.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that a “mass burial site” has been found and said “clear, verified information” would be released later today.

Ukrainian forces retook Izium after thousands of Russian troops fled the area, abandoning weapons and ammunition.

“For months a rampant terror, violence, torture and mass murders were in the occupied territories,” Zelenskiy adviser Mykhailo Podolyak tweeted in English, above a photo of a forest scattered with wooden crosses in fresh muddy ground.

“Anyone else wants to ‘freeze the war’ instead of sending tanks? We have no right to leave people alone with the Evil.”
