The summer’s annual reading challenge was launched today at Central Library with a group of young children from St Anne’s R C Primary School and local illustrator, Ian Morris.
The Summer Reading Challenge returns this year and the team of Gadgeteers are ready to transport young readers, aged between 4-11, into the fascinating world of technology.
The popular Summer Reading Challenge 2022 is the perfect way for young residents to keep up with their reading habits over the summer holidays and to discover the amazing science and innovation in the world around them. Budding Gadgeteers can also take part in free events that will be taking place all summer in libraries and museums.
Brought to life by children’s writer and illustrator Julian Beresford, the team of Gadgeteers will use their curiosity and wonder to guide young people through the summer and help them understand the science behind a whole range of interests, from fashion and technology to cooking and music.
From the first intercity railway to the industrial revolution, Manchester has a rich history of innovation that young people can discover and engage with over the summer holidays, with the help of the gadgeteers.
It is simple to take part in this year’s technology themed journey – children just have to read any six library books of their own choice or from the Gadgeteers collection of books and pick up a special sticker each time they finish one.
When children have completed the challenge, they will receive a medal and certificate for their hard work, they’ll also be entered the grand prize draw upon finishing the challenge. They’ll also be armed with facts about the innovative world of technology that surrounds us- ready to wow their peers and parents!
Participants will be able to engage in a wide range of activities and games both online and in person. Children are also given the opportunity to review the books they read throughout the challenge, and the four best reviewers stand to win a Kindle Fire so they can keep up their reading on the go and a bundle of books.
This year Manchester City Council are focusing on young people and offering them new opportunities as part of ‘Our Year 2022’. The campaign is dedicated to giving young people opportunities and amplifying their voices in the city. As part of this scheme, Manchester City Council and Read Manchester are extending the pilot programme and over 20,000 children in the city will receive their joining pack and library card via their school. Manchester City Council hope that this encourages children from all areas of the city to pick up a book this summer and get reading.
By providing fun reading activities, the Summer Reading Challenge supports families and teachers by providing free-to-access recreation and learning resources – all created to keep children inspired to read. The digital Summer Reading Challenge platform will encourage children with limited physical access to the library to take part in the Challenge.
