Manchester Piccadilly Rail station remains the second most used rail station in the country outside of London
Figures revealed by the regulator the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) showed that 27.4m people passed through the station in 2024/25 only beaten by Birmingham New Street with 36.6m.
Leeds came in third with 27.3m with Glasgow Central fourth with 25.2m people
London Liverpool Street was Great Britain’s busiest railway station for the third year running with almost 100 million users.
London Waterloo was the second most used station in the country, followed by London Waterloo, Paddington, Tottenham Court Road, London Bridge, London Victoria, Stratford, Farringdon, Bond Street and London Euston.
Manchester Victoria recorded 8.4m people while Manchester Airport saw over 4 million users,and Stockport came in with 3.8m
Six of the top 10 most popular flows – journeys between stations – were between stations served by the Elizabeth line, with 8.7m journeys between London Liverpool Street and Tottenham Court Road.
Elton and Orston in Nottinghamshire was Great Britain’s least used station, with just 68 recorded entries and exits. It was also the least used station in the year April 2021 to March 2022. Shippea Hill in Cambridgeshire (76) and Ince and Elton in Cheshire (98) also feature among the quietest stations.
Denton in Greater Manchester – last year’s least used station – is now fourth, after the number of entries and exits nearly doubled compared with last year.
