Sir Bobby Charlton, Manchester United legend and England World Cup winner has been diagnosed with dementia

His wife Lady Norma Charlton confirmed the news in an interview with the Daily Telegraph and said that the family were happy for this to be reported. She also expressed a hope that the knowledge of Sir Bobby’s diagnosis could help others.

The 83 year old who survived the Munich Air disaster in 1958 scored 249 goals in 758 games for Manchester United and 49 goals in 106 games for England.

He played in the 1966 World Cup final along with his brother Jackie who died earlier this year and won a European Cup winners medal with Manchester United in 1968
