Our Lady’s RC High School in Manchester are putting their best foot forward to walk 200km over 40 days to help fight global poverty, as part of CAFOD’s Big Lent Walk. There are 30 students from the school who have pledged to clock up 200km by Easter.

The Big Lent Walk supports CAFOD’s work in over 40 countries worldwide – helping those who have lost homes, livelihoods, family members, and face chronic food shortages in the wake of a burgeoning climate crisis and escalating global conflicts.

The students, who are aged between 11-16 years old have already made a dent in the 200km by walking every Wednesday and Friday lunchtime around the local area. They have promised to continue their twice weekly walks to reach their goal by 28 March. The school is tracking their progress on the CAFOD website and will complete the 200km by the Thursday before Easter, 28 March 2024.

Jessica White, R.E. teacher and Ethos Leader at Our Lady’s RC High School said: “At our school we believe it is important to understand the world around us, cherish where we live, and do our best to help those most in need. We live by our school ethos ‘To Know, Love and Serve God’, something which underpins everything we do. We joined in last year and the students loved it, as well as raising £200 for CAFOD. We are excited to continue this challenge and do our bit to change lives across the world.”

Neil Roper, Fundraising Events Manager at CAFOD, said: “We are so grateful to Our Lady RC High School and everyone who is taking part in our Big Lent Walk. Every pound raised makes a huge difference. Last year thousands of walkers got involved and this year we’re rallying even more participants, so we can reach more communities overseas.

“Embarking on a 200km journey might seem daunting, but if you break it up it’s manageable, and even fun! It’s not too late to get involved please sign up and challenge poverty to take a hike.”
